Examples of Climate Action Plans

Carleton College, Northfield, MN: Carleton’s Climate Action Plan focuses on five key focus areas that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions: Energy Supply and Demand, Transportation, Waste Management, Procurement,  and Land Management. Each focus area is linked to Carleton’s mission of stellar undergraduate education through opportunities for research, campus outreach, etc.

St Louis Park, Minnesota: St. Louis Park’s brand new climate action plan focuses on seven climate goals including reducing energy consumption in commercial buildings, designing and building all new construction to be net-zero energy (NZE), and reducing energy consumption in residential buildings.

Evanston, Illinois: Evanston’s Climate Action Plan is composed of 200 recommended strategies for reducing GHG emissions. Evanston’s plan includes creative community involvement tactics such as gaining support from the six largest Evanston institutions/ businesses through an energy-saving competition.

Bedford, New York: Bedford’s Climate Action Plan was created by the Bedford Energy Advisory Panel. When the panel unveiled the plan to the community, they also launched an organization called the “Bedford 2020 Coalition,” tasked with organizing and promoting community wide efforts to reduce Bedford’s greenhouse gas emissions 20% by 2020.

Urbana, Illinois: Urbana divided its Climate Action Plan into 2 phases, one that took place during 2013-2015 and another during 2015-2020. This phased implementation process made room for implementation of community feedback gathered through surveys, task forces, focus groups, and online forums.

Dubuque, Iowa:  Dubuque’s Climate Action Plan, adopted in 2013, aims to reduce Dubuque’s greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2050. In developing its plan, the city engaged in a collective social learning process to answer the question: How will we define and implement the necessary actions to meet Dubuque’s greenhouse gas and resiliency goals?
