International Film Forum: 500 YEARS

Theme: From Genocide to the Indigenous Movement in Guatemala

500 Years tells the epic story that brought Guatemala to a turning point in its history, from the genocide trial of General Ríos Montt to the popular movement that ousted President Otto Pérez Molina. While the indigenous peoples of Guatemala are no stranger to oppression, the recent events that took place during a tumultuous three-year period finally seems possible when their movement meets with popular society’s protest to end corruption.

Dinner on the Bluff

Follow along on a word and slide expedition through the lakes and portages of the Boundary Waters as narrated by one of Ely’s marginally OK camp cooks and just above average fishermen. Steve Piragis has been paddling the BWCAW with his wife Nancy for over 40 years and has outfitted more than a few folks to discover the magic in the granite of the Precambrian shield. Paddle with them up the Voyageur Highway to discover lakes so pure you can dip a cup to drink and miles of wild shores with never a cabin or a float plane or a motor boat.

A land set apart is a good way to describe the Boundary Waters. Geologic forces have left a unique lake scape of nearly a thousand lakes when combined with the Quetico Park on the Canadian side. Always a political hotbed of controversy, the BWCA Wilderness is again in the news as big international mining interests now see profits in the copper and nickel ores found just outside its borders. We’ll outline the reasoning why we oppose this type of development in this place.

Menu: Lake and Trail food featuring walleye, smoked meat, hard cheese, dried fruits and vegetables

E-Waste Recycling Event

Please make sure to drop off all materials on site only on the collection day. Jim, the recycler, is still accepting CRT televisions and monitors, but they must be transportable by one person and there is a small cash fee for each, depending on the size.

Any other electronic items will be accepted, as will metal items. If you have questions about what can or can’t be dropped off, please contact Jim directly at 651-214-3857.

Although balancing a tourist-dependent economy with environmental preservation can be challenging, the Central American country of Belize has been able to strike a balance by promoting ecotourism within its borders. Join us as we discuss how the country has progressed in the last 20 years to become a powerful resource for experiential learning for college students and other life-long learners. We will explore the format of a typical student study group as they tour the country to visit the rainforest, coral reefs, and educational farms of Belize.

Menu: Belizean fare featuring seafood, rice, beans, citrus, plantains

Democracy Extravaganza

The program for Democracy Extravaganza, sponsored by Cannon Valley Indivisible, is coming together. We hope you will join us!

Representatives from a dozen local grassroots and civic groups will participate in the organizations fair. You will have the opportunity to engage with them and learn how to get involved in issues that are important to you. Whether it’s health care, social justice, immigrant advocacy, voter registration, youth activism, gun control, climate and the environment, or local government, there will be something to engage you.

Candidates who plan to attend include: David Bly (State Representative), Tina Liebling (MN Governor), Erin Murphy (MN Governor), and Northfield native Matt Pelikan (MN Attorney General). David Wellstone will speak on behalf of Angie Craig (CD2 Representative) and Tim Walz (MN Governor). The MN Governor campaigns by Rebecca Otto and Chris Coleman also will be represented. All candidates and surrogates will speak briefly at the event and will be available for conversation afterward. Helen Forsythe will provide music.

And if you just want to connect with old friends or make new ones, you can sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee and a homemade cookie while you write notes to your elected officials on postcards specially designed for Democracy Extravaganza.
