Northfield Area Community Solar Info Session

Questions about Community Solar Gardens? Learn more at our next info session at Just Food Co-op!

Community solar gardens as one of the best ways to foster a community-wide response to climate change that reduces carbon in our atmosphere. Energy independence and environmental responsibility start at home – with a community solar garden subscription. With global climate change causing more disruption to our way of life each year, a group of Northfield residents decided to get together to do something about it. In partnership with MN Community Solar, they founded Northfield Area Community Solar (NACS), an organization formed to create solar gardens for Northfield area residents. NACS is composed of community members from all walks of life who have worked together for years to make Northfield more environmentally responsible.

Lecture: Nutrient Availability and Cycling in Driftless Area Streams

Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus often limit production in aquatic ecosystems, but high levels of these nutrients lead to system degradation. Stream ecosystems in the Driftless Area of the Upper Midwest are especially vulnerable to nutrient pollution because of the high nutrient inputs to the region and because many of the streams have very high connectivity to the landscape through karst topography. Once in a stream ecosystem, downstream transport of nutrients is primarily a function of hydrology and biotic processes. This seminar will highlight several research studies exploring nutrient concentrations and the mechanisms of nutrient cycling in Driftless Area streams.

Lecture: Integrating Social / Ecological Science for Conservation in Ethiopia

Traditional agricultural and pastoral landscapes are not only crucial for the livelihoods of farmers and herders, but also provide habitat for wild biodiversity, maintain water and soil resources, and serve as the genetic basis for the global food supply. In the highlands of Ethiopia, traditional agricultural landscapes are inherently social-ecological; environmental, economic, political, and cultural forces interact to shape the extent and distribution of biodiversity and ecosystem services. By overlaying ecological and social science datasets, it becomes possible to identify emergent patterns and that are not evident when looking through a strictly disciplinary lens, and that may be crucial for effective conservation. In the Gamo Highlands of Ethiopia, the joint use of conservation genetics and farmer interviews illuminates the way in which social institutions shape the spatial dynamics of crop genetic diversity in patterns that would not be visible through genetic methods alone.

Visions of California: A Retrospective

Michael Kowalewski, Lloyd McBride Professor of English & Environmental Studies and Associate Director of American Studies, has been teaching and writing about California for more than a quarter of a century at Carleton and at Princeton University. He will present a “self-retrospective” on his interdisciplinary “Visions of California” course, which explores the literature, history, art and visual culture of the Golden State, and which has garnered national attention both as an on-campus and an off-campus seminar.
