Northfield Area – Bird City Meeting

We will be convening the second Northfield Area – Bird City meeting on Thursday, February 11th from 5:15-6:30pm at Just Food Co-op. Together, residents, groups and officials improve habitat in the community, reduce threats to birds, and engage people to promote increased interest in and access to nature. Because of your work in the community it would be great to hear your ideas as we work together on moving this initiative forward. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact South Metro Community Coordinator Avery Hildebrand with Conservation Minnesota and Audubon Minnesota.

The Plight of the Pollinators

On February 15th, Carleton College will be hosting “The Plight of the Pollinators: A Conversation with Rep. Rick Hansen.” News of the rapid decline of honey bees, monarch butterflies, and native pollinators isn’t new. The problem is largely due to a lack of habitat and the prevalence of a new class of systemic insecticides that are wiping out pollinators.

Minnesota has been one of the leaders on this issue, both through state and local action, but also through the actions of concerned citizens. Still, there’s a lot more to be done. During this event you will hear about on the ground impacts with beekeepers, local efforts with Northfield City Councilor Erica Zweifel, what can be done across Greater Minnesota with Rep. David Bly (DFL-Northfield), and about the bigger picture with Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL-South Saint Paul). Come and join the discussion on what can be done to help pollinators.

What: The Plight of the Pollinators: A Conversation with Rep. Rick Hansen

Where: Carleton College – Weitz Center for Creativity (Larson Meeting Room #236)

When: Monday, February 15, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

There’s a lot of “buzz” in the Minnesota legislature on this topic, including policy proposals that would both restore habitat and limit pollinators’ exposure to harmful pesticides.

In conjunction with Carleton’s Climate Action Week, join Northfield’s State House Representative David Bly and Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) for a Pollinator Public Policy Forum on February 15, 2014 at the Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity (Room 236).

The event will include presentations and question and answer session. Doors open at 6:30 PM — with displays available — and there is no cost to attend.

“This Changes Everything” Movie Screening

Join us on Wednesday, February 17th at 7 pm in the Weitz Cinema for a screening of the renowned documentary “This Changes Everything,” based on Naomi Klein’s bestselling book. The movie argues that “we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.” Hosted by DivestCarleton, contact schlassas@carleton.edu with questions.

Waste Matters: Presentation and Discussion

Where does our trash go? Is recycling actually environmentally friendly? How can we compost through the winter in Minnesota?

As part of Carleton College’s Climate Action Week, join us on February 9th at 4:30 pm in Sayles-Hill Campus Center Room 251 to learn more about Carleton’s waste streams and provide a platform for open discussion about waste issues and the environment. Paul Piper from the Rice County Landfill will also give a presentation on how landfills operate. There will also be food and games! Contact linke@carleton.edu with questions.

Inter-Faith Social Action (IFSA) Discussion

As part of Carleton College Climate Action Week, join Carleton’s Inter-Faith Social Action (IFSA) student group on February 9th at 8:30 pm in the Chapel Lounge for a discussion on how to enact environmental and social change at the local level.
